Overview
Climate change refers to the long-term warming of the planet due to an increase in average global temperatures, primarily caused by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and land-use changes, which release large amounts of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. The consequences of climate change are far-reaching, from more frequent and severe weather events like hurricanes, droughts, and wildfires, to rising sea levels, melting glaciers, and altered ecosystems. The scientific consensus is clear: human-induced climate change is real, and it's happening at an unprecedented rate. According to NASA, the past four years have been the hottest on record, with 2020 being the hottest year ever recorded, with a global average temperature of 1.02°C above the 1961-1990 average. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, global carbon emissions must be cut by 45% by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050. As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, one thing is certain: the future of our planet depends on our ability to adapt, innovate, and work together to reduce our carbon footprint and transition to a more sustainable, renewable energy-based economy.
